Abstract

One of the problems faced by the government of Indonesia in teaching English is the inability of students in doing National Examination (UN). Many critics directly address to the teachers when at the end of the study the students are unable to pass the examination. Instead of blaming them, constructing a good test is very much better to conduct. Thus, teacher made test should be better constructed. The main purpose of the study was to make a proper and good classroom test in regular class of seventh grade of junior high school. Firstly to do was choosing particular standard competences to be developed into its mapping, syllabus and lesson plans. Then, the indicators stated in lesson plans were classified into the level of Bloom’s revised taxonomy before going with the goal of item test. The constructed test items then were tried out into three classes from three different schools. The results indicated that from 35 items of multiple choices, only 5 which were invalid. 85.7% of the items were valid and 14.3% were invalid; however, those invalid items have fulfilled the requirements of plausible distracters; therefore those 5 items can still be used with some revision. In addition, the fill-in and the essay items have fulfilled the requirements of a good item format test. The dependability computation showed 0.796 or 80%. It means that the items were 80% dependable. It covered the materials of the given subject. The validity and the dependability computations show that the item test is proper and categorized good. Therefore, the constructed item test can be used in regular teaching and learning process.
