Abstract

The Comparative Analysis of Teacher-Made First Term English Summative Test (The case for the Eighth Grade Students of SMP N 02 Limbangan and SMP N 01 Limbangan in the Academic Year of 2009/2010). A test that is intended to measure the students’ achievement must fulfill the characteristics of a good test. This study is focused on validity and dependability item test analysis based on the School Based Curriculum (KTSP with their own test items or KTSP with MGMP test). The test is administered to the eighth grade students of SMP N 01 Limbangan and SMP N 02 Limbangan. The objectives of this study are to find out the validity of English summative teacher-made test and MGMP test, the dependability, and which school has fulfilled the requirements of a good test in terms of validity and dependability. The method used in analyzing the data is quantitative approach. The population is the eighth grade students of SMP N 01 Limbangan and SMP N 02 Limbangan in the academic year of 2009 /2010. SMP N 01 Limbangan has five classes that each of them consists of thirty eight to forty students while SMP N 02 Limbangan has four classes that consist of twenty six to thirty. Thus, the total numbers of the population are: SMP N 01 Limbangan has 186 students and SMP N 02 Limbangan has 113 students. The writer thought that the number of students from both schools are too big for this purpose, so she took eight students’ answer sheets from each class from SMP N 01 Limbangan, while for SMP N 02 Limbangan the writer took ten students from each class as the sample by using the random sampling technique. From the result of the data analysis, the validity of SMP N 01 Limbangan has higher number of valid test item than SMP N 2 Limbangan. By applying the phi (lambda) dependability index formula, it is found that the dependability index from SMP N 01 Limbangan is 0.82% and SMP N 02 Limbangan has dependability index 0.84%. It means that the English summative test which is administered in the end of the first semester of the eighth grade students from both schools is dependable. By looking at the result, the writer draws a conclusion that the test items made by the teacher themselves are better than test items made by the Local English Teacher Association” (MGMP). In this comparative study, the analysis result of SMP N 01 Limbangan has proved it. Based on the result of the investigation, it can be suggested: First, for the test constructors (teachers), they should make themselves familiar with the characteristic of a good test. Because of the curriculum is KTSP, it will be better if they make the test items by themselves, based on what the students’ have learned. In constructing the test items, they also can ask for some experts and colleagues to make it perfect. Second, for the students, they must prepare for the test well by studying the whole of materials.
