Abstract
Ariadi, Bayu. 2010. Students’ Mastery of Vocabulary of Class surroundings; the Case of the Fifth Graders of SDN II Wonoharjo in the Academic Year 2008/2009. A Final Project. English Department, Faculty of Languages and Arts, Semarang State University. First Advisor: Drs. Alim Sukrisno, M.A. Second Advisor: Intan Permata Hapsari, S.Pd, M.Pd. Key words: mastery level, vocabulary, elementary school. Vocabulary is central to learning language process as an essential part and it plays an important role in it. By having a good mastery of vocabulary, the teachers will be facilitated in explaining the materials to the students, and so the students, they will be able to understand what the teachers talk easily. In the contrary, they will face some problems in learning process if they don’t have a good mastery of vocabulary. To gather the data in this final project, the steps were; inventorizing the vocabulary in the fifth grade classroom, conducting a test, correcting the students’ works, counting and then computing test results, and finally determining the students’ ability in mastering the vocabulary based on the Curriculum 2004 Criterion of Mastery Level. The result of the study shows that there are 47 concrete words can be found in the fifth grade classroom. All of them were used as the test items to find out the vocabulary mastery of the students. After doing a test, I find that the students only master 59.24% of the 47 concrete objects in average. This means that they only master 28 of 47 words. Besides, I find that for this lesson material, the English teacher of SDN II Wonoharjo requires 20 words to be mastered by the students. Based on this requirement, the students master 63.67% of these 20 words. In other words they only master 13 words of 20 words. From the result presented above, I can draw conclusions that based on the Curriculum 2004 Criterion of Mastery Level, the mastery of the students is still poor. From this, it is suggested that the students have to study harder in order to improve their vocabulary mastery and the teacher should do some improvement in his teaching to facilitate the students to improve their vocabulary mastery.
