Abstract

Nindyasari, Kristiana. 2010. THE STUDENTS’ MASTERY IN USING PARTICIPLE FORMS (The Case of the Eleventh Year Students of SMA Negeri 5 Semarang in the Academic Year of 2009/2010). Final Project. English Departement. Faculty of Languages and Arts. Semarang State University. Advisor I: Sri Wuli Fitriati, S.Pd., M.Pd. Advisor II: Drs. L. Elyas Nugraha, M.A. Keywords: Participle Forms, Students’ Mastery, Qualitative - descriptive Research. This final project is a descriptive qualitative study. The problems of this study is to what extent the eleventh year students of SMA Negeri 5 Semarang in the academic year of 2009/2010 master the participle forms and what the difficulties faced by the students in using participle forms. In order to achieve the objectives of the study, namely: 1) to obtain the description of the mastery in using participle forms of the eleventh year students of SMA Negeri 5 Semarang in the academic 2009/2010, and 2) to find out the difficulties faced by the students in using participle forms, I designed a qualitative study by collecting the required data from library facility and conducting a research at SMA Negeri 5 Semarang. I did my research by giving the students a try-out test, achievement test, and questionnaire. The population of this study was the eleventh year students of SMA Negeri 5 Semarang in the academic year of 2009/2010 which consisted of 357 students divided into ten classes. I took 34 students of XI IPA 2 class, to do the try-out test that consists of 60 multiple choice items. Then, I took 38 students as the sample, which is XI IPA 1 class, to be asked to sit for the achievement test which consists of 50 multiple choice items and also to answer the questionnaire. According to the data analysis, I found that the mean score of the students is 73.7 which equals to 73.7% of the possible highest score. According to the criteria suggested by Tinambunan (1988), the students’ mastery of participle forms can be classified into below average achievement. From the test analysis, according to Tinambunan's criterion (1988), the result shows that the majority of the students’ achievement (66%) is very weak. While, according to the criteria stated by Depdikbud (2003), no student got the score below average level. It means according to this criterion, all of the students have mastered the use of participle forms. Furthermore, according to the passing grade of SMA Negeri 5 Semarang, the most of the students (79%) have mastered the material. From the result of the questionnaire, the most of the students still faced difficulties in using participle forms especially in comprehending adjective clause (75%). Considering the result, I offer several suggestions: for the students, they should learn how to use participle in various forms and functions and for teachers, they should give clear explanation about the rules and their applications and also give more complex and various examples.
