Abstract

Erlifiana, Harizka. 2010. The Implicature in the Dan Brown’s Novel The Da Vinci Code. Final Project. English Department. Faculty of Languages and Arts. Semarang State University. First Advisor: Drs. Januarius Mujiyanto, M.Hum., Second Advisor: Henrikus Joko Yulianto, S.S., M.Hum. Key Words: Implicature, Pragmatics, The Gricean Maxims, The Da Vinci Code The topic of this study is The Implicature in Dan Brown’s Novel The Da Vinci Code. The objective of this study is to describe the implicature found in The Da Vinci Code novel by Dan Brown. Descriptive qualitative method was adopted in this study. The data collected were qualitative and I had several roles as the researcher; those were as the data collector, the data analyzer, and the data reporter. The object of the study was The Da Vinci Code novel. There were 105 chapters, a prologue and an epilogue. I took the direct speeches found in the prologue, chapter 1, chapter 2, chapter 3, chapter 4 and chapter 5 as the data. The procedures of collecting data used in this research were data eliciting, data inventory and data classification. Then the procedures of analyzing the data were separating the data and explaining the meaning. In procedures of reporting the result, I used data reduction and data description. The result of this research was the implicatures found in the utterances of direct speeches in The Da Vinci Code novel from prologue until chapter 5 based on the Gricean Maxims and each utterance which contains implicature the meaning of the implicatures in utterances in The Da Vinci Code novel from prologue until chapter 5 has its own meaning which is different each other. The differences occur because the meaning of the implicature is based on the context. I suggest that implicature will be analyzed deeper by describing the way to apply implicature in the utterances so that research about implicature will develop from time to time and be useful for teaching learning process.
