Abstract

ABSTRACT Mauludin, Lutfi Ashar. 2010. Cohesion in the Letters to the Editor in Kang Guru Magazine A final Project. English Department, Faculty of Languages and Arts, Semarang State University. Advisor I Dr. Djoko Sutopo, MSi and Advisor II Sri Wuli Fitriati, SPd, MPd. Keywords: Cohesion Analysis, Discourse, Letters to the Editor, Magazine. The topic of this study is Cohesion in the Letters to the Editor in Kang Guru Magazine. The objectives of this study are to describe whether the letters which are published by Kang Guru Magazine are written cohesively and to explain the type of cohesive devices which is mostly used in those letters. This is a descriptive-qualitative study. There are two main types of cohesion. They are grammatical and lexical cohesion. Grammatical cohesion consists of reference, substitution, ellipsis and conjunction. Lexical cohesion consists of reiteration and collocation. The data of the study were six letters. I analyzed the data through sequence of steps. They are assigning numbers to each sentence, identifying and classifying the cohesion devices in each sentence, putting the devices into table, counting the percentages of each device and interpreting the result. The data analysis showed that from four elements of grammatical cohesions, only three occur in the letters: reference, ellipsis and conjunction. From that occurrence, the highest percentage of grammatical cohesion was reference (91.67%) and the lowest percentage was conjunction (6.25%). For lexical cohesion, from the occurrence the highest percentage was reiteration (100%) and the lowest percentage was collocation (9.09%). Reference and Ellipsis occurred in all letters. Conjunction occurs in four letters. Substitution did not occur in all letters. Reiteration showed higher percentage than collocation in terms of lexical cohesion. There is only one letter which collocation did not occur. Based on the analysis, it can be concluded that all letters under this study which were published in Kang Guru Magazine were written cohesive grammatically and lexically. Reference is cohesion device that is mostly used in terms of grammatical cohesion and reiteration is cohesion device that is mostly used in terms of lexical cohesion. Therefore it can be concluded that the letters to the editor in Kang Guru Magazine is good as the source for reading or writing material in English teaching and learning process.
