Prihatiningsih, Fidya Martiyani, 2010. The Realization of Interpersonal Meaning in Green Day’s Song “American Idiot” Lyrics. Final project. English Department. Faculty of Languages and Arts. Semarang State University. First Advisor: Widhiyanto, S.Pd, M.Pd., Second Advisor: Dr. Djoko Sutopo, M.Si. Key Words: Mood, residue, and modality (SFL) This final project is about the interpersonal meaning analysis of clauses in the Green Day’s song lyrics entitled “American Idiot” that realized in the system of Mood and Modality. Song lyrics are the words of a song or song text. It adds meaning to the song that expresses the song writer idea about any phenomena. Every song has its own meaning and moral values. It is because through song lyrics, the song writer can conduct communication with the listener about what they think of something in their own perspective that may different from other. From the reasons above I would like to analyze the lyrics of one Green Day’s phenomenal song entitled “American Idiot”. The study is to analyze the interpersonal meaning that realized in “American Idiot” song lyrics and also the main moral values from this song. The interpersonal meanings are revealed by the system of Mood and Modality. Descriptive qualitative method is used in this research. I apply this method because all the data is in the form of words. The interpersonal meaning includes the process of analyzing mood and modality of the clauses. The mood and modality includes the definition of mood elements (subject and finite), residue (predicator and complement), and the adjunct (mood adjunct; circumstantial adjunct and comment adjunct). Identifying the mood means that we identify the type of each clause whether it is imperative, declarative, and interrogative or exclamative. The result of this study shows that in “American Idiot” lyrics, declarative are the major mood in the clauses than there is only one interrogative. Moreover, only one clause which has modality that is probability. For the most dominant speech function is statement. The moral values of the song are to be smart, critical and have your own personality. I hope this study will give significance theoretically, practically and pedagogically for anyone who interest and concern to text analyses particularly in song lyrics analysis using interpersonal approach. For those who want to take similar study, I suggest that read and collect as many as source which support to the analysis and for anyone who love to listen to song, it is better for you not only enjoying the song but also to care the meaning of it.
