Abstract

ABSTRACT Ariani, I’is, 2010. The Effectiveness of Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) to Improve Students’ Ability in Writing Recount Text (An action research conducted to the Eighth Year Students of the State Junior High School 2 Petarukan in the Academic Year of 2009/2010). Final Project. English Department. Faculty of Languages and Arts. Semarang State University. First Advisor: Drs. Suprapto, M.Hum., Second Advisor: Rini Susanti Wulandari, S.S., M.Hum. Key Words: Writing Skill, Recount Text, Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) The statement of the problem that many students still have difficulties in writing because of the lack of vocabulary, language functions, grammar, especially for making sentences in a good arrangement. The objectives of this study were to describe what kind of CTL that could improve students’ writing skill in recount text, and find out the effectiveness of the application of CTL method in improving teaching writing for eighth grade students. This study was focused on students’ improvement in writing recount text by using CTL method. In order to achieve the objectives of the study, I designed an action research that consist of pre-test and two cycles of treatment. The subjects of this study are the VIII A grade students of SMP N 2 Petarukan in academic year 2009/2010. The number of the subject is 40 students. There were six meetings during the research and the students had to write a text of at least ten sentences. Before the research was conducted, a pre-test was given. The test was writing recount text with certain topic. Before administering the post test, I gave explanation about recount text to the student first by using CTL method and then discussed the topic that they had chosen in the pre-test. The topic was “My Trip to Jogja”. I did this activity in order to make the student had their own sentence about the topic. The result of this study shows that the post test (test cycle 1 and test cycle 2) scores were much better than the pre-test. The pre-test score was 61.4, the first cycle was 65.9, and the second cycle was 77.3. The result of this study reveals that the average of the students’ post test result was 80. This means that CTL method improved the students’ writing skill in recount text. The main factor affecting this success is the student’ interest in the method used that was CTL method and material given. From the findings, I can conclude that the use of CTL is effective to improve students’ skill in writing recount text. Thus, the teacher can use CTL as a technique to teach students in writing recount. It hopefully would motivate the English teachers to use new technique to teach writing recount text in their classroom.
