Abstract

This study described the idiom found in “Twilight” novel by Stephenie Meyer. In conducting the research, I used descriptive analysis since the purpose of this study is to analyze how the English idioms are translated into Indonesian found in the novel Twilight. These strategies based on Baker (1992): (1) using an idiom of similar meaning and form, (2) using an idiom of similar meaning but different form, (3) translation by paraphrase, and (4) translation by omission. Among the problematic factors involved in translation, the present project was going to concentrate mainly on the strategies of translating idiom. It is because the idioms were to be found in the daily speech of English people. The topic was very important to help Indonesian learners in studying English as a foreign language, especially about idiom. I limited the study in English idiom found in the novel and the strategies that the translator used to translate the English idiom into Indonesian. The result of the study was expected to give some benefits. The benefits such as improve the learners understanding especially the idioms, also made the writer could mention the meaning of idioms existing in the novel and knew the strategies in translating idioms to the target language. I took some steps in collecting the data. First, I read the novel. By reading the novel both language English and its translation in Indonesian, I obtained data. Then, I marked the sentences with idiom inside. Second, I collected the idioms. In collecting the data, I typed the English sentences with idiom along with the Indonesian translation. Third, I identified the data found according to my case study. Fourth, I compared the English idiom with its translation into Indonesian to know the strategies that used. The last is analyzing. I analyzed the data found to know how the strategies are used in translating the idiom. The result showed that there are two hundred and six idioms in the novel along with the strategies used. Sixty one idioms are translated using similar meaning and form, sixty seven idioms are translated using similar meaning but dissimilar form, sixty five idioms are translated by paraphrase, and thirteen idioms are translated by omission. Based on the result of the study, I concluded that there are four strategies used in translating the idiomatic expression in the novel based on the theory. The most strategy used is using an idiom of similar meaning but dissimilar form, the second is translating by paraphrase, the third is using an idiom of similar meaning and form, and the last is translating by omission.
