The results of the study reveal as follows; 1) there are nine kinds of swear words; intercourse expression, excrement, general insult, damn, hell, ass, urine expression, God and Jesus Christ; 2) the swear words that are used in the film have a referential meaning which is taken from lexical connotation and an emotive meaning which could be an expression of anger, disappointment, feeling of upset, carelessness and warning; 3) the use of swear words has purposes depending on the context and relationship between participants; to offend, to build a comfortable situation and to be an identity of a certain group. The results of the study lead us to several conclusions; those are: 1) there are nine kinds of swear words which are used by the characters in the film, Hostage; 2) referential and emotive meanings of swear words can be determined through a context in which a conversation occurs; 3) the use of swear words is influenced by kinds of relationship between participants, degree of formality and psychological setting when a conversation happens.
