Abstract

Figurative language is a language that cannot take literally. When people do not use the same language to communication, they could transmit a phrase of meaning through their statement. It means that language is an important in the communication process in order to convey the message, there must be a clear understanding between the two speakers in grasping the meaning behind the statements. Moreover, students have low proficiency in vocabulary, particularly in figurative language. Based on this issue, this study aims to describe the figurative language and its meaning in song lyrics and poems used in Bahasa Inggris textbook grade XI published by Ministry of Education and Culture in the year 2017. The research design of this study is qualitative research. It is expected the result of this study will be useful for the teacher, students, and readers about the various types and meaning of figurative language they will get in the literary works. The analysis is done by classifying the song lyrics and poems based on Perrine’s classification of figurative language (1992). That are three song lyrics and three poems that are analyzed. The findings showed that from 30 expressions comprise 7 types of figurative languages. They are simile, metaphor, personification, apostrophe, symbol, paradox, hyperbole. By analyzing the meaning of the figurative language, it can be identified that the song lyrics and poems in Bahasa Inggris textbook grade XI published by Ministry of Education and Culture in the year 2017 tells about struggle, survival and hope. All those song lyrics and poems can inspire the students as a reader.
