Abstract

Racial discrimination is one of the major problems in the society. Even though colonialism era has already over, the injustice treatments toward African-American is still happening until now. This research looks at the relationship between African-American and white people in the United States during the Jim Crow era. Hidden Figures, by Margot Lee Shetterly, shows modern African-American’s way of life and the discriminations that they are facing. This novel tells about the lives of African-American women who work at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in the 1960s. The aim of this research is to see the colonialism impact. This research used descriptive qualitative method to look specific depictions of racial discrimination, colonialism impact, and postcolonial strategy. Through Postcolonial theory, especially Orientalism by Edward Said and Hybrid & Mimicry by Homi K. Bhabha, this research resulted the impact of colonialism and the African-American’ survival strategy. Because of the injustice treatments against African-American (ex colonized), African-American try to assimilate themselves into the American society that was dominated by white people (ex-colonizer). The culture assimilation was a survival strategy for African-American. Thus, it resulted Hybrid culture make African-American look almost the same to white people, but not quite.
