Abstract

In the last ten years, online games have spread everywhere. Now, online game become the most popular entertainment that uses English as the main language. The majority of electronic devices, especially smartphones have English as a primary language features. So that English cannot be separated from our life. Therefore, this topic was chosen because this trend is booming and widely played among students. This study aimed to identify the students’ perceptions on Online Game Practices and Their Vocabulary Attainment in SMA Negeri 1 Gebog. This research used qualitative methods, data from this study were collected through online using two methods, namely questionnaires and interviews. Ten students from class XI IPA 1 in SMA Negeri 1 Gebog were taken as the research sample. For the questionnaire there are 20 close-ended questions and for the interview there are 5 open-ended questions. These study's findings revealed that playing an online game can help them improve English vocabulary more fun and easier. Game online also gives students the opportunity to learn and practice language skill. It can be proven by the result of questionnaire that more than 70% of the students give a positive perception. From interviews conducted by giving students random vocabulary related to online games that they play, most of students answered correctly. The next, students are also given vocabulary in real life context and they can answer correctly as well as understand the meaning of these sentences. It means students attainment on English vocabulary is pretty good enough.
