Abstract
One of the causes of women’s stereotypes is the existence of patriarchal society. Patriarchal society that positions men over women, devalues women in society. South Korea is known as a country that still holds strong patriarchal culture. Thus, in conducting the research, a Korean novel by Cho Nam-Joo entitled Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982 (2020) was decided as the primary data. This qualitative descriptive study employed Saussure’s structuralism and binary opposition in analyzing the data. The findings of the study are as follows: the researcher got the idea of women’s stereotypes by identifying the patriarchal society in Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982 novel and also by drawing the binary opposition from it. There are four keys of patriarchal society in the novel which are: (1) male-centered, (2) male-dominated, (3) maleidentified and (4) patriarchal obsession of control. From those keys, the researcher comes into some notions that there are nine stereotypes related to women as a result of patriarchal society which are: (1) women are less valuable than men, (2) women are placed after men, (3 women cannot have ambitions and dreams (4) women are passive, (5) women are obedient (6) women have no place in leadership, (7) women are powerless, (8) women are objects, and (9) women are in charge of communal based activity only
