Abstract

This study aims to find out the students’ and teachers’ perceptions toward the use of Microsoft Teams as an online learning platform for English Subject. Data from this study were collected by using two methods, namely questionnaires and interviews. Questionnaires were distributed online via Google Forms and interviews were conducted online via WhatsApp Video Call for students and faceto-face interview at school for the teachers. The questionnaire data were analyzed descriptively and supported with the interview data. The subjects of this study were ten eighth-grade students and two English teachers at SMP Negeri 21 Semarang. The findings were presented into four parts: students’ and teachers’ perceived usefulness, students’ and teachers’ perceived ease of use, students’ and teachers’ anxiety, and students’ and teachers’ attitude toward the use of Microsoft Teams as an online learning platform. Based on the findings, it was found that the majority of students’ and teachers’ perceptions of using Microsoft Teams as an online learning platform for English Subject were positive. Despite some drawbacks such as technical problems and the potential for cheating, both students and teachers believed that Microsoft Teams is a useful, easy, and comfortable platform for conducting online learning even it is categorized as something new for them. Therefore, students and teachers agreed that Microsoft Teams is such an effective online learning platform that can keep teaching and learning activities going during the pandemic.
