Abstract
The idea of rhetoric is commonly, consciously or not consciously, used by people in various implementations to persuade, entice, motivate, or inspire other people. Public speaking is one activity that puts concerns on the idea of rhetoric. This research focuses on analyzing the use of rhetoric in public speaking. Rhetoric analysis is a way to break down how someone persuades others with the use of rhetoric strategies. This research’s purpose is to analyze the use of rhetorical proofs and to explain the speech delivery strategies used by the speaker to deliver effective speech to the audience. The speech being analyzed belongs to Rita Pierson. She is an experienced educator since 1972 who delivered her speech about the importance of relationship with students on TED Talk on 13rd of May 2013. The transcript and video of her speech are being analyzed in this research. Qualitative approach and content analysis are the methods to conduct this research. According to the results, Rita Pierson used all types of rhetorical proofs in her speech. She used ethical proof (ethos) for 44.9%, logical proof (logos) for 30.8% and emotional proof (pathos) for 24.3%. In delivering her speech she also used speech delivery strategies. She managed to use storytelling for 49% of her speech to help her explaining ideas. From how she delivered her speech it can be seen that she maintained good posture and body movements, used a proper pace, pitch and volume, and gave precise pauses in her speech. However, she didn’t use any visual aid due to the speech was to motivate and she deemed it’s not necessary to use visual aids. According to the findings above, it is concluded that ethos is the most dominant type of proof in her speech. She was successful in showing the audience her competence and credibility as a speaker who is experienced in her field of work. Furthermore, she also managed to deliver her ideas through good speech delivery strategies. In the end, the researcher suggests future researchers who may take interest in this research to add more topics to be studied like rhetorical devices or other five canons of rhetoric beside speech delivery
