Abstract

The topic of the research is teaching classroom instructions to the year five of elementary school students using total physical response of SD N Gayamsari 2 Semarang. The number of the subjects in this research was 45 students. The objectives of this study are to describe the effectivenes of TPR method in teaching classroom instructions to the year five elementary school students, to identify the improvement of English using TPR method. In collecting the data, I used tests, field notes, and questionnaire. In order to achieve the objective of this research, I designed an action research. There were two cycles in this study. Each of them consisted of five meetings. I gave some difference list of instructions in each cycle. I conducted an achievement test in the end of each cycle. There were four types of test in this action research. They were pre-test, first cycle test, and second cycle test, and post-test. The purpose of giving a test was to measure the students’ progress after the treatment given. The questions in pre-test are different from the questions in post-test, but still about classroom instructions lists. The result of this research showed that the students’ understanding of learning classroom instructions improved after they were given the treatments. It can be seen from the average result of the students’ pre-test, first cycle test, and second cycle test, and post-test which were each 59.6 %; 66.72 %; 72.22%; and 78.38 %. It means that there is a significance difference in the students’ achievements after they were given treatments. In line with the result, I suggest this activity be used to improve classroom instructions. The teacher may use it as an alternative aid to create a situation which makes the students interested in English.
