Abstract
This study was aimed to describe how sin and love construct the identity of women through the novel of Daphne du Maurier entitled My Cousin Rachel. As the data of the study were in the form of sentences, dialogue, phrases, and narrative, a qualitative method is served by using a literature review. It is chosen because the qualitative method is based on human behaviors or actions. Furthermore, this study also analyzed gender and feminism as a part of human behaviors and actions . In analyzing the data, I employed Simone de Beauvoir’s existentialist feminism theory as an approach to describe sin and love in du Maurier’s My Cousin Rachel. The result of the study indicates that sin and love is displayed through Rachel’s general description and gender reconstruction. The findings show that through Rachel's general description, sin and love are described through three women’s attitudes according to Beauvoir, who is prostitute, narcissist, and mystic. This research highlights how sin and love are described and creates the identity of women. It concludes that women have an unseen charisma that is able to make the men understand what she wants by manipulating men’s feelings using the response of an event. Rachel's personality is powerful on the inside because she is able to push Philip with her charm not just for her purpose, but also for Philip's benefit. She was not overtly telling the man what she genuinely desired, but rather utilizing her charisma and personality to claim what she was authorized to get.
