Abstract

Idiomatic expressions are frequently used in many types of literary works. Therefore, translating them can be difficult. Since they cannot be translated literally, the translators encounter a number of issues when translating those expressions. An appropriate translation strategy is needed to address the issues. Moreover, the quality of an idiom translation is determined by the use of appropriate translation strategies because an idiom's meaning cannot be determined by its single words. The research was conducted to analyze the strategies used in translating the idioms by applying Baker’s translation strategy and to evaluating the quality of naturalness of the translated idioms by applying Nababan’s research. The data were taken from idioms found in From Dead To Worse novel. There were 106 data which were analyzed qualitatively to determine what strategies were employed and evaluating the naturalness of translated idioms. For collecting the data, the writer uses a documentary study as a technique to collect the data. There were four strategies employed in translating idioms, they were using an idiom of similar meaning but dissimilar form, using an idiom of similar meaning and form, translation by omission, and translation by paraphrase. The most frequent strategy used by the translator is translation by paraphrase (53,7%), because the equivalent idioms in Bahasa Indonesia are not available. It followed by using an idiom of similar meaning and form (30,2%), using an idiom of similar meaning and form (14,2%), and translation by omission (1,9%). Meanwhile, the naturalness of the translation showed that, 81,2% of the data belong to the “natural” level, 15,7% of the data is considered to fall into “less natural” level, and 3,1% of the data is classified as “unnatural”. It can be concluded that based on the naturalness level, the translation of idioms is natural. Then, it is suggested that Indonesian translators should understand KBBI (The Great Dictionary of Indonesian Language) in order to produce translated texts in Indonesian. Moreover, the translator must be aware of the cultural differences between the Source Language (SL) and the Target Language (TL) in order for their translation to be understood in the TL.
