Abstract
The development of technology is a cultural phenomenon that affects society. This phenomenon mostly occurred in large nations, especially in the United States of America. Modernization makes humans increasingly compete to raise technology in something global. It can control and enslave the human mind. It is also represented in Dave Eggers’s The Circle which mostly portrays the life of Mae Holland who is frequently controlled by the technology her company creates in many ways. This study aims to describe how technology is depicted and how technology controls American society as represented in The Circle novel. The method of this study is a descriptive-qualitative study. The data is analyzed by Antonio Gramsci’s Hegemony theory and scooped by the sociology of literature. The data analysis is based on the structure of technology occurred by Circle’s technology as dominant and American society as subordinate creating the depiction of technology in the novel as a tool that has a high selling value for business and as a medium of hegemony. The control of technology occurs because of consensual control that influences the author’s idea unconsciously and represents it in literary works.
