Abstract

Many teenagers in the US have lost their rights to live despite the government's declarations and commitments to protect the rights of teenagers. This situation is reflected in John Green's novel Paper Towns, which mostly describes the lives of teenagers under the demands and pressures imposed by society, their families and their peers. This study aims to reveal the demands and pressures from society, family, and peers resulting in teenager's painfulness and how teenagers subvert it. This research method is qualitative research. Data were analysed with theory of Paul de Man’s deconstruction. The method of data analysis is based on the opposition of centre and periphery group that focus on demands and pressure resulting in teenager’s painfulness. Paper Towns shows that there is opposition between society, family, and peers with teenagers because of demands and pressures; ruling and ruled, beloved and unloved, popular and the unpopular, good and bad. Paper Towns also shows that against the demands and pressures that resulting in teenager's painfulness can be done by having the courage to refuse. This subversion occurs as a result of the demands and pressures that teenagers get because they were treated inhumanely. As a result, teenagers have the awareness to fight for their rights to live without getting demands and pressures that force them.
