Abstract
South Africa is well-known for its sordid political system, apartheid, which has been implemented for forty-six years. This ideology is meant to separate people according to their race (white, Indian, colored, black or Bantu) for the hegemony of the whites. The practices of the segregation in South Africa during the apartheid era are portrayed in A Dry White Season novel by Andre Brink. This study is aimed to explain (1) the apartheid system, (2) the culture’s portrayal of a white-South Africans, and (3) the alienation of a white-South Africans. This qualitative descriptive study employed Postcolonialism and Orientalism theory by Edward W. Said in analyzing the data. The results of the study are: 1) the description of apartheid system in the novel is in line with the apartheid system happened in South Africa during 1948-1994. 2) The whites’ cultures as the dominator culture in apartheid system, which are: culture of forcing to believe and apply the values which considered to be true by the dominance of the white society, culture of instilling the value of domination over blacks, culture of instilling the idea of the running system or the procedure is true, and the culture of being racist towards the blacks. 3) The five forms of alienation of a white-South Africans, they are: cultural estrangement; isolation; normlessness; powerlessness; and self-estrangement. Although the protagonist is a white, he experienced alienation. It means, the hegemony of the white applied in apartheid policy, does not result successfully, for it can be also subjected the white.
