Abstract

This final project is based on psychoanalytic theory with Thirteen Reasons Why novel as the object. This novel was written by Jay Asher. It talked about a teenager who got depressed because of various reasons and decided to commit suicide at the end of the story. This study analyzed the character development of the main character and how the depression was reflected in her depression phase. The aim of this study is to discuss about the main character by using psychoanalysis theory. This study is a qualitative research. The data were taken from the object of the study in the form of sentences. The procedure of collecting data was done by reading, identifying, inventorying, analyzing, and reporting. In conducting the study, the psychoanalytic approach by Sigmund Freud was used. The results of the study show that bullying, sexual assault, and guilty feeling took parts of the main character development. They gave effects on her psychology, such as giving anxiety, hurtful feeling, insecurity, remorse, and etc. that made her change from an ordinary teenager to a depressed one. The id, ego, superego, and defense mechanisms were reflected on the way the depressed main character faced the problems in her life.
