Abstract
Having a struggle with self-acceptance from a beauty perspective becomes a big issue period by period. People are taught by society and social media that certain features are a semblance of beauty itself. This paper is aimed to describe how Alessia Cara’s Scars to Your Beautiful represents the acceptance of self-beauty which is seen from the culture portrayed inside the lyrics. This research used descriptive qualitative research by applying Michael Riffaterre’s semiotics approach. The first step was applying heuristic reading. This step was aimed to get the first order of the semiotics system. The meaning obtained was only from dictionary meanings. The last step was hermeneutic reading. This was aimed to obtain an integrated interpretation of the text’s meaning. The results show that (1) from heuristic reading, the song describes the self-acceptance and the beauty standard which existed in society; (2) from hermeneutic reading, the matrix is the self-acceptance of self-beauty, the model of the song is insecurity. The model is expanded into the form of variants that spread to the whole song, which are 1) change, 2) envy and 3) perfect, and the hypogram is the literary work from Alessia Cara’s song entitled Wild Things which shows the self-acceptance discourse in oneself.
