Abstract

This research aimed at (1) finding the association between teachers’ immediacy and students’ in-class willingness to communicate in English and (2) discovering the most prominent aspects of teachers’ immediacy among the students. This research employed a quantitative method. The research participants were teenage to adult English learners in Kampung Inggris Semarang. The instruments used for collecting the data were questionnaires. The data were obtained by using a direct survey. The direct survey was used to find both correlations between teachers’ immediacy and students’ in-class willingness to communicate and the most prominent aspects of teachers’ immediacy. In this regard, both instructional immediacy and relational immediacy. Pearson Product Moment Correlation was employed to find whether there is any correlation between teacher immediacy as the independent variable and students’ WTC as the dependent variable. The result showed an inter-correlation between the two variables with Pearson coefficient (r) = 0.427. This research also found the correlation significance between the variables with a significant coefficient (p) = 0.005. On the other hand, finding the eminent aspects of teacher immediacy was done by calculating the means of the respondents' results. The research revealed that immediacy behaviour related to a teacher’s passion for teaching and fair treatment of the students are the most desirable among the students.
