Abstract

Language is known as a primary means of communication. Many language products have been developed in written communication, such as stories, speeches, songs, and more. Those language products always have essential elements that connect with each other. For example, in a short story, there are two important elements called themes and moral values that must be applied unitedly to derive meanings and logical meanings for its storyline through language use. This research is aiming to uncover the theme and moral values using the analysis of Appraisal system developed by Martin and White, 2005. The object of the research is a short story entitled The Lottery written by Shirley Jackson in 1948. The result of the study showed that there are 143 Attitude resources (37 Affect, 83 Judgment, and 23 Appreciation), 16 Engagement resources (16 Heterogloss), and 63 Graduation resources (31 Force and 32 Focus). From the counts, it is clearly shown that Attitude resources become the most used resources in the story. Moreover, in Attitude resources, the most frequent resource is Judgment, with 83 resources (58.04%). This Appraisal resources distribution is interpreted and resulting there are two themes found in the story, those are: (1) The power of ritual or tradition among people and (2) The juxtapositions of tranquility and brutality. Meanwhile for moral values, there are also two moral values found in the story, those are: (1) People can’t blindly follow tradition without considering the consequences and (2) Murder can’t be normalized even if it’s for ritual or tradition. These themes and moral values is still align with the previous study that revealed the hidden ideology from The Lottery by Shirley Jackson even though the distribution of each Appraisal Resources is different one to another. Furthermore, the result of this research can also be used by the students to compare the accuracy between interpreting theme and moral value using Appraisal Framework and fast reading or scanning.
