Abstract

As one of the compulsory subjects in middle school, English has been challenging for most Indonesian students given their poor English proficiency. This is correlational research that aims to analyze whether there is a correlation between multiple intelligence and EFL students’ English proficiency and explains the relationship between multiple intelligence and EFL students’ English proficiency. Respondents were 87 eighth-grade students of SMP Mardi Rahayu Ungaran. To collect the data, this research used the Multiple Intelligence (MI) test developed by Walter L. McKenzie, Jr. in 2012 based on the Howard Gardner theory. In addition, students' English Proficiency was obtained from English teachers. The data analysis results revealed a significant and positive correlation between multiple intelligences and EFL students’ English proficiency. Moreover, the findings indicated that verbal intelligence scores were the best predictor of students’ English proficiency, followed by existential intelligence as the second predictor of students’ English proficiency.
