Abstract
The objectives of this study are to explain the thematic structure and to explore the thematic development patterns of descriptive texts found in Indonesian EFL textbook entitled “Students’ Book: English 1 for SMA/MA Grade X Kelompok Wajib”. The textbook referred to Kurikulum 2013 Edisi Revisi as one of the national curriculums in Indonesia. Based on the curriculum, descriptive text is the first written text genre to be learned by high school students. Therefore, the EFL textbook should provide understandable and coherent descriptive texts for the student level. The text coherence can be figured out by the realization of textual meaning. This study was conducted due to the limited number of previous studies that analyze the textual meaning realized in descriptive texts in Indonesian EFL textbooks. The descriptive qualitative research method was employed to analyzed eleven descriptive texts in the textbook using Systemic Functional Linguistics theory to figure out the thematic structure and thematic development. The result of the thematic structure analysis revealed that simple theme in the form of unmarked topical theme was the most used thematic structure in carrying the main topic of the descriptive texts. After the thematic structure analysis, the thematic development was explored and the result showed that theme reiteration was the most used pattern since it could maintain the topical focus of the texts in the simplest way so that the descriptive texts could achieve text coherence while presenting an understandable model for the tenth-grade students as freshman-year learners.
