Abstract

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the Duolingo Application in improving students' vocabulary mastery. This study uses a quantitative method with a quasi-experimental design. This study involved seventh-grade students of MTs Manbaul Ulum Tlogorejo, with class 7A as the Experiment class and 7B as the Control class. The Experimental class was given treatment using the Duolingo application, while the control class was taught without Duolingo Application. The instrument used to collect data is the vocabulary test in pretest and post-test. Based on the analysis of the pre-test result, the findings showed that the mean score of the experimental class was 25.14 and the control class was 27.57. After the treatment was given, the post-test average score of the experimental class was 81.2 and the control class was 32.4. The Independent Sample T-test is used to determine if there is a significant difference after using Duolingo. The results show that the t-count was 11.581; the t-table was 0.388, and the Sig. (2-tailed) 0.000. Because the t-count results are greater than the ttable (11.581 > 0.388) and the Sig. is smaller than 0.05 (0.000 < 0.05), it can be said that Ho (null hypothesis) is rejected, and Ha (alternative hypothesis) is accepted. From these results, it can be concluded that Duolingo Application is proven effective in increasing students' vocabulary because there is a significant difference in vocabulary mastery between classes taught and using Duolingo and classes that are not.
