Abstract

This study focuses on analyzing the critical thinking elements reflected in secondary level students’ analytical exposition texts. This study aims to explore the students’ critical thinking skill in writing analytical exposition texts and to find out their critical thinking level. This current research is a descriptive qualitative research using content analysis method to examine the realization of students’ critical thinking reflected in their texts. NEIU’s Critical Thinking Rubric (2005) and Critical Thinking Criteria by Bassham et al. (2019) are utilized to analyze the students’ analytical exposition text. The result of data analysis found that the critical thinking elements are not sufficiently reflected in the students’ analytical exposition texts. The students are able to identify problems and provide correct assumptions. However, they are still struggling to develop the ideas and evaluate the reason behind their claims. On top of that, they also do not provide evidence to support their assumptions. With that being said, their critical thinking level is still low. Out of 20 students, none of them reaches Proficiency level or High Proficiency level. Most of the students are at Some Proficiency level as there are 13 of them who are at this level, while the rest of the students are at No/Limited Proficiency level.
