Abstract
This study aims to describe the implementation of the international Telegram group “English Cafe” as a medium for improving students‘ speaking skills and students’ perceptions towards it. This study examines the speaking activities that have been conducted in an international Telegram group called “English Cafe” which runs the discussion through the “Video Chat” feature. This study also examines the students’ perception towards the implementation of the international Telegram group “English Cafe” as a medium to improve students‘ speaking skills. Thirty-one students members of English Club at SMK Negeri 1 Wonosobo who had joined the speaking activities in the international Telegram Group “English Cafe” were taken as a research sample. This study is qualitative descriptive research with the use of a case study approach. The data were collected through observations, interviews, and questionnaires. The responses from the questionnaire are organized to obtain the percentage and followed by a descriptive explanation. The results of this study show that the implementation of the speaking activities in the international Telegram group “English Cafe” held discussions in six meetings with proper preparations and routine steps to minimize challenges. Before the session started, students were informed about the meeting schedules, topics to be discussed, speaking strategies used, and moderators who played an essential role in managing the discussion. Even though systematic preparation had been implemented, technical problems like unstable connections still occurred. Furthermore, the data findings related to the student perceptions regarding the international Telegram group “English Cafe” as a medium to improve students' speaking skills concluded that the speaking activities in the international Telegram group “English Cafe” helps students to create a better speaking performance. The Students' positive responses perceived that the activity help them in creating sentences with correct structure and grammar, producing sounds with appropriate pronunciation, enriching vocabulary, comprehending the information during the discussion, and developing fluency. In addition, the international Telegram group “English Cafe” also have a good learning environment that brings students confidence so that they are motivated to socialize globally, participate actively in speaking activities, and build critical thinking during the discussion.
