Abstract

This study focuses on analysing the transitivity system of recount texts written by the students of English literature program in the Academic Year of 2020/2021. This study aims to identify the processes, participants, and circumstances realised in recount texts written by the students. Descriptive qualitative was applied as a method of this research. The findings revealed that there are six types of processes in students’ recount texts, with the most dominant were material processes (45.78%), relational processes (29.52%), and mental processes (13.56%). The students used material processes to describe their past experiences or activities chronologically. The findings also showed that the most dominant participants were the Actor (22.91%), which were realised by the word I and we indicating the students’ texts focus on specific participants. The findings also show that the most dominant circumstances were circumstances of location consisting of circumstances of time (36.55%) and circumstances of place (26.10%). These circumstances explained where and when the students had their experiences. The use of material processes, specific participants, and circumstances of location indicated that the students had fulfilled the criteria of recount texts. The findings also reveal the students employ certain processes, participants, and circumstances for each stage since each stage has a different purpose or aims to deliver different ideas.
