Abstract

This study aimed to explore the use of a Westlife song as a learning medium to learn vocabulary at SMP Negeri 2 Bontang and to describe the students’ difficulties in using a Westlife song as a learning medium to learn vocabulary at SMP Negeri 2 Bontang. The subjects of this study were students of class IX A and IX E at SMP Negeri 2 Bontang. This study observed the use of a Westlife song as a learning medium to learn vocabulary of class IX A and IX E, which can help enhance the students’ vocabulary. The focused of this research was the use of a Westlife song as a learning medium to enhance students’ vocabulary. This research used a descriptive qualitative method. The data collection method in this study used observation, questionnaire, interview and analysis of Miles and Huberman to reached the conclusion. The results of this study were (1) students had a positive experience using a Westlife song as their learning medium to learn vocabulary; (2) students verified that the use of a Westlife song was really helpful in their vocabulary; (3) the use of a Westlife song helped students in enhanced their vocabulary; (4) the use of a Westlife song encouraged students' creativity in learning English, (5) some students had trouble understand the implied meaning in the text lyrics. In conclusion, that using a Westlife song was very helpful and affected for students in vocabulary, especially class of IX A and IX E at SMP Negeri 2 Bontang.
