Abstract

There are several ways to learn advanced English, such as by using media technologies. One of the most well-known technologically driven learning resources is YouTube. Although using YouTube videos for teaching and studying English vocabulary has gained popularity, there are certain factors to consider. Therefore, a qualitative case study method was used to investigate the use of YouTube videos for teaching vocabulary to 11th grade EFL learners of a public high school in Wonosobo Central Java. This study analyzed data from an interview with a teacher who taught 11th grade and collected questionnaires from 63 students to examine the usage of YouTube as a teaching and learning resource for English vocabulary. Then, I examined the teacher’s interview and the students’ questionnaire, and based on those analyses, I created several categories and themes. The research revealed that YouTube was used by the teacher to teach and students to study English vocabulary. Despite this, not many students use YouTube frequently. One of the reasons the teacher and students do not usually use YouTube for English vocabulary teaching and learning is due to a number of difficulties.
