Abstract

The first thing in doing language learning that is important is in the input aspect of language learning. We can learn foreign languages by using reading or listening input. In learning reading, we can learn about vocabulary, grammar and the content of what we read. Meanwhile the students face difficulties in reading comprehension such as poor ability in comprehending a text. Many strategies can be used to improve students' reading comprehension skill, one of which is scanning strategy. This study investigates the use of scanning technique in improving students’ reading comprehension of label text. The objective of this study is to find out the impact of using scanning technique in improving students’ reading comprehension of label text. There are 62 students taken which are equally in number grouped into an experimental group and a control group. Both groups were considered to be equal in reading performance with regard to the result of pre-test carried out before the experiment. Experimental group is the class where the researcher supervised it, and control group is a group where the researcher does not supervise it with the experiments. In analyzing the data, statistics is used. The results show that the post-test score given to the experimental group is 79.87 from the pretest score 60.62, which is significantly higher than the control group which is 77.42 from the pretest score 63.61. Based on these findings, scanning strategies is undoubtedly effective in increasing students' reading comprehension.
