Abstract
This study aims to find out the realization of transitivity system and the ideational meaning of Joe Biden’s victory speech. This study belongs to a discourse study using a qualitative method to gain an optimal analysis to describe systematically the fact and the characteristics of ideational meaning of Joe Biden’s victory speech. The data of this study is Joe Biden’s victory speech delivered in 2020 downloaded from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1AfNYztas2c and the script was downloaded from https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2020/11/07/annotated-biden-victory�speech/. After the data were retrieved from the internet, they were segmented into moves as the unit of analysis of this study. There were 185 moves found in the speech. Next, the moves’ transitivity elements and their realization were identified. Lastly, the ideational meaning of Joe Biden’s victory speech is inferred from the results of the transitivity analysis. According to the analysis, participant, process, and circumstance elements are found in Joe Biden’s victory speech. There are 47.80% material process, 24.39% relational process, 15.61% mental process, 8.78% verbal process, 1.95% behavioural process and 1.46% existential process in the data. In participant types, the percentage is as follows: actor (16.90%), goal (22.25%), client (0.85%), recipient (4.23%), carrier (10.99%), attribute (11.83%), token (3.10%), value (3.10%), senser (7.89%), phenomenon (7.61%), sayer (4.79%), verbiage (2.54%), receiver (1.69%), behaver (1.13%), range (0.28%), existent (0.85%). Furthermore, in circumstance types there are: time (21.30%), place (12.04%), manner (27.78%), cause (19.44%), accompaniment (9.26%), matter (5.56%), and role (4.63%). From the transitivity analysis, it is found that material process is the dominant process type, goal and actor are the two dominant participant types, and manner is the most dominant circumstance type. The material process in Joe Biden’s victory speech is mostly realized by the verbs "make," "give", "restore", "build"; while the most used participant is the goal and is dominated by the words "chance”, “it”, “America”, and “nation”. Biden used the word "we" as dominant actor, referring to himself and American citizens, both his supporters and Trump supporters. The words that mostly used in circumstance of manner are "again", "never", “hard”, “like”, and "under control". In the victory speech, the topic is mostly talked about Joe Biden who invited Americans to work together in healing America. He wants American citizens to take real action in facing the challenges under control.
