Abstract

Speaking and acquiring good English communication has become very important nowadays. Speaking in a new language is the most difficult skill students experience because it is more complex than other skills. Presentation using visual aids has become one of the popular methods used in universities to overcome difficulties. However, the previous research examines the teacher's point of view. Therefore, to give another side, this study was conducted to investigate students’ perception of the importance of using visual aids in oral presentation. Through this research, the researcher tried to determine the students’ perception of how important and effective visual aids are in practicing the speaking skill, its strengths, and its weakness. This qualitative study focuses on describing, analyzing, and interpreting the data. The data was gathered from a questionnaire and interview. The findings show that the majority of students have a positive perception. Accuracy and vocabulary were the most speaking aspects that students’ felt improve. Visual aids also help them to overcome anxiety and improve their confidence. Overall, the result shows that students get benefit from visual aids to practice their speaking skills. Therefore, the findings are expected to provide insight to teachers or lecturers when deciding to use this learning method.
