Abstract
The study aimed to observe the ability by students of eleventh grade at SMA N 5 Purworejo in using active and passive voice to develop explanation text. The study focused on identifying students’ ability level in using active and passive voice and analyse what internal and external factors which influence their ability in learning. Mix method was adopted and applied to obtain and manage the gathered data. To conduct this study and to gather reliable data, forty-five students were chosen randomly as the subject of the study. Students’ answer sheets were collected to know their ability level in using active and passive voice. In addition, students’ interviews were analysed to know what factors which influence students’ learning process. The collected data were analysed according to Tinambunan (1998) about level of achievement and Syah (2004) about factors which influence students’ learning. The result of the study revealed that the students’ ability level was in the range of average to insufficient level. There were only 3 students (6.7%) in average level, 12 students (26.7 %) were in below average level, and 30 students (66.7 %) were in insufficient level. According to the students’ interview, the internal factors which influence their ability were motivation, intelligence, attitude and adequate time. In addition, the external factors which influence students’ ability are teachers, peers and parents.
