Abstract

The topic of the study is “Ideational Metafunction in Opinion Text of The Jakarta Post Newspaper.” This study aimed to find out the components of the transitivity system used in opinion text from The Jakarta Post newspaper. Therefore, the researcher three questions as the problem as follows: how is the realization of process types in the opinion text of The Jakarta Post newspaper? how is the realization of participants in the opinion text of The Jakarta Post newspaper? how is the realization of circumstances in opinion text of The Jakarta Post newspaper? The Jakarta Post newspaper is a famous English newspaper in Indonesia that have several parts to present the news including the headline, opinion column, etc. The opinion text was investigated to find out the ideational metafunction features of the text conducted by the opinion writer. This study used a qualitative approach. The data was obtained from the opinion column of The Jakarta Post Newspaper. The researcher only took one text from the newspaper which raised the topic of economics in the Covid-19 pandemic. I chose the text as the data of the study because I think this text is worth reading by the readers in the face of the economic changes in Covid 19 pandemic. Therefore, I analysed the data using the transitivity system inside the opinion text by classifying the features of participants, processes, and circumstances following the theory from Halliday (2014) and Gerrit and Wignell (1994). The findings showed that six processes appeared in the opinion text Material, Mental, Relational, Verbal, Behavioural, and Existential processes. The material process covered 50 % of the whole text. then, the dominant participant found were actors and goal. While the dominant circumstances were cause and location. Therefore, it is suggested the English students which interested in the study of opinion text from the newspaper. The ideational metafunction can help us to know the ideas of the text. Thus, it gives us an easier way to understand the information from the newspaper text by revealing the three components aspect of the transitivity system.
