Abstract

This study aims at investigating the implementation of a Performance-based Assessment (PBA) technique to assess students’ HOTS in English learning. The objectives of the study were to explain the implementation of PBA to assess students’ analysing skill, to explain the implementation of PBA to assess students’ evaluating skill, to explain the implementation of PBA to assess students’ creating skill, and to explain the relationship among analysing skill, evaluating skill, and creating skill when used to assess students’ HOTS. The method applied was a descriptive qualitative with a case study design. The study was conducted at SMPN 2 Semarang with an English teacher of ninth grade as the subject. The data was collected through observation, interview, and document analysis. Due to COVID-19, the classroom observation was done online. After analysing the result of the classroom observation interview and document, the study found that the teacher implemented process-focused assessment by using probing questions for assessing students’ analysing and evaluating skill. Meanwhile, the creating skill was assessed by implementing project-based learning through demonstration. From the study revealed, it is concluded that the teacher did a proper way of PBA implementation in stimulating students’ HOTS.
