Abstract
Derivational affixes are word construction processes that entail the insertion of affixes such as prefixes and/or suffixes. Understanding derivational affixes is essential for enhancing second language vocabulary acquisition. This research aims to find out the types of derivational affixes and discover the functions of derivational affixes in the Mobile Legends hero story background. The data was gathered from the hero background story in Mobile Legends: Bang Bang. This final project belongs to qualitative descriptive research. This study is used theory propose by Katamba (2020) and Brinton (2000). The discovery indicated that there are 695 words associated with derivational affixes found in Mobile Legends'' hero background story. There are 62 words with derivational prefixes, such as dis-, -en-, im-, and re-, while 550 words have derivational suffixes like -ion, -ty, -ness, - ment, -er, -ence, -less, -ous, -able, -ive, -ent, -al, and -ly, and 84 have circumfixes like "re- + -able," "un- + -ly," and "im- + -able." The derivational affixes functions consist of nominalizer, verbalizer, adjectivalizer, and adverbalizer. Furthermore, the function of the words indicated as "class changing" is 566 words, while the function of the words indicated as "class maintaining" is 129 words. In conclusion, the derivational affixes process in Mobile Legends'' hero story background is extremely useful in assisting readers in breaking down unfamiliar words into easily understood segments. Furthermore, it aids in increasing their vocabulary and makes learning new words easier.
