Abstract

This research focused on analysing speech acts found in the conversation between Ganjar Pranowo and the Austrian Ambassador for Indonesia on Ganjar Pranowo YouTube channel. This study aims to describe the classification of speech act found in the conversation between Ganjar Pranowo and Dr. Johannes Peterlik and to identify the most dominant speech act found in the conversation between Ganjar Pranowo and Dr. Johannes Peterlik. There are three dimensions of speech acts, according to Searle (1979) in Yule (1996), namely locutionary acts, illocutionary acts, and perlocutionary act. Searle (1979) in Yule (1996) divided speech acts into five types: declarations, representatives, expressives, directives, and commisives. Descriptive qualitative was used as the method in conducting this research. I chose the conversation between Ganjar Pranowo and Dr. Johannes Peterlik to be analyzed in this study. There are four steps of procedures of collecting the data. The first step was downloading the video from Youtube. Second, repeatedly I watched the video. Third, I made the transcription of the video in English because the subtitle of the video is in Indonesia. I also gave attention to the gestures and mimics of the participants. Fourth, I identified the utterances of each sentence in the transcript and coded each of them based on speech act. The result of analysis showed that there are four types of speech acts found in Ganjar Pranowo and Austria’s ambassador conversation i.e. assertives, directives, commisives and declaration. Furthermore, assertives includes informing, questioning, describing, and stating. The kinds of directives consists of inviting and requesting. Commisives include promising and offering. Last but not least, declaration includes declaring. Furthermore, the dominant speech acts in Ganjar Pranowo and Austria’s ambassador conversation consist of assertives. The frequency is 58.2%. It can be concluded that among those types of assertive, describing shows the highest frequency. This implies that there are many descriptions presented by both Ganjar Pranowo and Dr. Johannes Peterlik in the conversation especially about the detail of how to run the collaboration project between Austria and Central Java. I suggest for the students to learn speech acts. This can minimize the misunderstanding occurred in communication since the study of speech acts gives knowledge about the intended meaning behind the utterance and for the future researchers, speech act has a broad coverage. There are many interrelated aspects of speech acts that can be analyzed. They can investigate speech acts in different context such as in a dialogue, song lyrics and the like therefore it may enrich the pattern or model of speech acts.
