Abstract

This study focuses on impoliteness strategies used by teachers and students. This study is aimed to find out the types of impoliteness strategies used by teachers and students and describe the factors causing the use of impolite expression by teachers and students in SMP N 2 Welahan. The research design used was a descriptive qualitative method. Observation sheets, interviews, and documentation were used to collect data. The subjects of the study were two teachers and eighth-grade students in SMP N 2 Welahan. Based on the data analysis, it was found 17 utterances from the data conversation of Culpeper’s impoliteness strategies. The findings from the teacher utterances can be found in three types of impoliteness strategies, they are; five utterances of bald on record impoliteness, three negative impoliteness, and one sarcasm or mock impoliteness. While positive impoliteness and withhold politeness do not exist in the teacher’s utterances. The findings from the students’ utterances such as bald on record impoliteness which has three utterances, positive impoliteness which has two utterances, negative impoliteness which has one utterance, sarcasm or mock impoliteness which has one utterance, and withhold politeness which has one utterance. In this research can be found that five factors are causing the use of impoliteness expression by teachers and students in SMP N 2 Welahan, such as social status, age, gender, social distance or familiarity, and situation.
