Abstract

Indonesian government has implemented a distance learning system or online learning to stop COVID-19 pandemic. Online learning should be conducted with good preparations and improvement to make sure students get their right as students to learn. English learning during the pandemic certainly faces many challenges, so teachers must be as creative as possible in choosing appropriate learning methods. Although there are the challenges that we should face during online learning, this learning model also can help students to overcome their speaking anxiety and low self-confidence problem in English classroom. This study focused on how students experience speaking anxiety before online learning and the impact of online learning that can help students face those problem in English classroom. This research is the type of reprospective research with descriptive qualitative method for analysing the data. Data were obtained from 45 questionnaire respondents and using random sampling method to choose the interview respondents. The results of the study show that students experienced speaking anxiety before online learning such as shyness or lack confidence, nervousness, fear of making mistake, bad pronounciation, lack of vocabularies and preparedness, fear of feedback and criticism, teacher and friends’ glance, teasing from other, and task activities. Then, online learning can help students overcome their problems because it has a new course design, prompting higher motivation and self confidence, flexible time management, comfortableness, and ease students' speaking anxiety. From this study it can be concluded that the application of online learning can help students in overcoming speaking anxiety and low self-confidence problem.
