Abstract
Higher Order Thinking Skill (HOTS) is a crucial issue these days to prepare students for the future. Indeed English as an international language plays an important role. English as a subject in vocational school becomes an important material in Indonesia. The purpose of learning a foreign language is to make the students be able to communicate using English not only in written form but also orally. The purpose of this study is to find out the result of the application of NHT and Socrates strategies to Promote Higher Order Thinking skills for students with high and low anxieties. This research is quantitative, where the findings are presented in a graphic or diagram with the calculation of the results. The research indicators and scoring rubric are needed to conduct this research. The rubrics were to measure students’ critical thinking and speaking in every meeting. The questionnaire is also needed to measure the student's anxiety. In this research, there are pre-test, materials delivered using the strategies, and post-test in two classes at the eleventh grader of Zaenuddin vocational school. The difference point between the NHT and the Socrates strategies is, that the NHT strategy is employed the students to work in a group, whereas Socrates strategy force students to work individually. The result shows that the NHT and Socrates strategies affect the students with low anxiety to promote HOTS. Moreover, the NHT strategy is more effective to promote HOTS in speaking to students with high and low anxieties because the strategy can reduce the student’s negative feelings to speak among their peers. Some students may forget some vocabulary due to school from home since covid-19 pandemic. By using the strategy, students can improve their vocabulary and critical thinking when speaking with peers. Finally, this research has a suggestion for the teachers, the students, and the next researchers if use NHT and Socrates strategies. Both are effective to promote the HOTS of the students in oral language.
