Abstract

Civil war or revolution still becomes a big problem in today’s era. The source of the problem appears because of injustice and unhealthy state order. Latin America is one of the regions that are often at war. This situation portrayed in Isabel Allende’s Eva Luna which tells about the reason for a movement and its failure that never truly display in media. This study aims to reveal the story behind the cause and the failure of the revolution. Furthermore, this study employs a qualitative research methodology. The data were analyzed based on the postcolonial approach, that took advantage of the theory of Fanonism which formulated by Frantz Fanon. The finding showed the polarities that occurred due to the relationship between government and society during the dictatorship to democracy that always put the government at “the Self”. Consequently, the position as the Self creates society as “the Other”. The resistance was shown using violence, as well as rebuilding the national culture (the culture of struggle). However, because of the limitation of revolutionaries and their position as the Other, the attempt at revolution failed.
