Abstract

This study is about the use of UKBM to promote students’ English learning. A new system for the Curriculum 2013 is Semester Credit System (SKS). By implementing SKS, both teachers and students have to use UKBM in the teaching and learning process. UKBM stands for Unit Kegiatan Belajar Mandiri which can be translated as an Independent Learning Activity Unit. Using UKBM will be beneficial for teachers to know which students who have been able to master the materials and which students who need more attention from the teacher in order to master the materials. Therefore, teachers have important role in the class, how the way the class running well it depends on how the teacher in managing the class and how the teacher control their students in a class. Based on this issue, this study aims to find out students’ perception of using UKBM to promote their English learning. Several previous studies have explored UKBM and their implementation in the classroom. Others have focused on investigating the teachers’ skill using UKBM to support English learning. However, this study differs from the previous studies. This study is intended to analyze students’ perception of the use of UKBM to promote their English learning independently. This study is a content analysis that employs a descriptive qualitative approach. Data collected by questionnaire and interview. The results of analysis shows there is a negative findings of students’ perceptions on the use of UKBM to promote students’ English learning. Also, in terms of the usage of UKBM for independent learning, most of the students perceive it negatively.
