Abstract

Due to COVID-19 pandemic, learning has been conducted online. However, the utilization of technology in language learning is not without barriers. This study used mixed-method as research design to find out the technological barriers faced by students in online learning, the impacts of technological barriers in English language learning, and the ways students overcome the technological barriers to learn English. By using questionnaire and interviews as method to collect the data, this study analysed 37 of 6th semester students at English Department of UNNES. This study found that the distraction of other application, expensive technology, and poor internet connection were the most barriers found by students. The technological barrier had negative impacts in English learning activities such as teacher explanation via computer is unclear because of poor internet connection, difficulties to understand the material, difficulties to discuss the assignment with team work, difficulties to communicate each other, and technological barriers distracted the students’ focus. The ways students used to overcome the technological barrier are finding another place to get stable internet connection and asking their classmates if they don’t understand the material well because of technological barriers. Preparing before using technology is another solution to minimize the technological barriers
