Abstract

Women had been suffering from sexist attitudes for a long time. In a Patriarchal society, sexist attitudes is still rooted in and applied by some people in Asia, especially in South Korea. The liberal feminist movement awakens women’s desire to speak up, which is often hindered by sexism. Sexism behavior usually stems from inter-gender stereotypes and the belief that certain genders have a better and superior position than others. As a reflection of society, literature presents itself as a suitable to speak out about social issues, sexist attitudes being one of it. This research analyses Kim Ji Young in Cho Nam Joo’s Kim Ji Young, Born 1982 which had been translated from Korean into English by Jamie Chang. In the novel, Kim Ji Young fight against sexist attitudes in the midst of patriarchal society. There are three objectives of this research. The first one is to find out the kinds of ambivalent sexism in Kim Ji-Young Born 1982 which are depicted through Glick and Fiske’s Ambivalent Sexism theory. The second is to identify the impact of ambivalent sexism on the female character’s life. Lastly, the writer tries to find out the resistance that female characters show to fight against ambivalent sexism in society. The writer used descriptive qualitative research as the methodology with the ambivalent sexism theory related to this research topic and the liberal feminism approach depicted in the novel. This research shows that Ji Young experiences two types of ambivalent sexism from childhood until marriage, namely benevolent and hostile. Hostile sexism that she experienced is gender-based violence, workplace discrimination, and societal expectations that limit Kim Ji Young’s opportunities. At the same time, benevolent sexism appears as patronizing attitudes that reinforce gender stereotypes and restrict women’s agency. The impact of ambivalent sexism on Kim Ji Young’s life is significant, leading to frustration, helplessness, and a sense of being trapped in a system that perpetuates gender inequality. It affects the institutionalized such as government system and workplace, mental health, and experiences of sexual assault. Despite initially internalizing and accepting the sexist attitudes she faces, Kim Ji Young gradually becomes more aware of the injustices and starts to resist them by performing personal independence, demanding for education and work, and challenging unequal treatment. Overall, Kim Ji Young's resistance to sexism takes many forms, but it is characterized by her refusal to accept discrimination and her determination to pursue her own goals and aspirations
