Abstract

Simile is a sentence that compares two different things. similes are used to beautify the meaning and message of a sentence. This study aims to describe how similes are depicted and to explain the contextual meaning of similes in the book of Psalm. The method of this research is descriptive qualitative. The data is analyzed with the semiology theory of Roland Barthes (1983). The data were analyzed by interpreting the simile sentences based on the literal meaning to find the signifier. Then interpreting the signifier based on the cultural meaning and to find the signified in the secondary modeling system and contextualize the literal signified that corresponds to the simile sentences found in the book of Psalms. The results of this study are praise, prayer, petition and thanksgiving described by the psalmist to God. Praise because of God's help, glory and power over all things. petition for God to help his people, thanksgiving when God's enemies have been defeated and destroyed before God's people and victory for those who live according to God's word.
